Health;    Course #5500
.50 Credit

Prerequisite: None

This course shall include instruction in the physical, mental, and emotional social aspects of one’s health. Topics to be covered include the study of physical fitness, nutrition, mental health, safety, first aid and CPR.  Students successfully completing the first aid, CPR part of the class are eligible for Red Cross certification in first aid and CPR.  Current information on risks of tobacco, alcohol and drugs is emphasized.  Studies will also include heredity and genetics.

 
 

Fitness and Wellness;    Course #5560
.50 Credit

Prerequisite: Materials:  Athletic shoes w/non-marking soles

This class combines fitness activities with a wellness curriculum.  Current fitness levels are evaluated; students set individual fitness goals and then participate in a program of exercise in order to improve physical fitness in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility and body composition.  Students also explore current research and principles of physical fitness, nutrition, weight management, health related decision making and first aid.  Class participation in activities, class work projects and test scores are all considered for the final course grade.  Students will use community facilities for some activities.  This class may be repeated for credit.

 
 

Power Walking;    Course #5121

Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to introduce the student to walking as a lifetime aerobic activity.  Students will explore proper technique and training guidelines.  The five major components of fitness will be targeted using various walking courses and a variety of resistance training activities.  Walking will be done throughout the class with appropriate dress required for both hot and cold temperatures.  This class may be repeated for credit.

 
 

Supervised Curriculum P.E.;    Course #5067
.50 Credit

Prerequisite: None

This course is designed for students who wish to improve their fitness levels through participation in an activity outside of school such as martial arts, dancing, gymnastics, weight-lifting, supervised gym workouts, etc.  The activity must be supervised and signed-off by a professional.  Students interested in applying for P.E.  credit through this program must complete an application and have it approved by the SCPE Coordinator prior to submitting Supervised Curriculum P.E.  hours.  It is important to be aware of the following basic information:

1. It is the student’s responsibility to secure, complete and return the SCPE application.  Applications may be obtained from the SCPE Coordinator.  The application must be approved before beginning to accrue hours toward this credit.
2. Students enrolled in the program must submit an Activity Log Sheet to the SCPE Coordinator approximately every two weeks.
3. SCPE credit may only be used to meet the P.E. requirement for a maximum of two (2.0) credits.  SCPE may not be used for elective credit.
